Virtual Spine Day 3

Virtual Spine Day 3

Distance Covered Today – 13.88 miles

Total Distance covered – 40.30 miles

Virtual

Slightly warner day but still barely getting above zero degrees. Slightly stiffer breeze gives a colder feel.

This stretch lacks the scenic splendour of the last two days and the sound of ‘civilization’ (i.e. the niggling buzz of traffic) are never far away. However, there is still much to enjoy, especially the views approaching the Calder Valley, under the watchful eye of Stoodley Pike, which dominates the second half of the day. There’s plenty of flat walking and much of this section sticks to the high moors and gritstone edges. Close to my home town now as I pass through Todmorden and stop for the day just before Hebden Bridge.

Reality

Cold day hovering just above zero with a fresh NE wind making it feel icy cold out of the sun

Walk 13.88 miles – A nice steady walk today which was meant to be around 9 miles to Salterforth and back but we extended the route up into Barnoldswick for a coffee and some lunch albeit from a garage due to the shops closed with the pandemic.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider sponsoring me for this mammoth challenge, it’s for an incredible cause and inspired by an incredible person in Laura Nuttall 🙂

My motivation for this has come from a very special person called Laura Nuttall who in late 2018, was diagnosed with terminal multiple brain tumours at the young age of 18. Her determination and positive attitude to not only live her life to the full but also to help others as an ambassador for the charity is just incredible and I’m proud to join the fight in whatever way I can. You can read Laura’s story at the following link. Please be generous and help this great charity to raise much-needed funds for researching a cure.

Virtual Spine Day 2

Virtual Spine Day 2

Distance Covered Today – 15.67 miles

Total Distance covered – 26.42miles

Virtual

Very cold and sunny with a gentle breeze

Another cold but clear day today with a sharp frost and -3 degrees to wake me up this morning. Not as tough, or as scenic, as yesterday as the compelling journey through the savage beauty of the Peak District’s gritstone moors is mostly flat walking followed by a long but enjoyable descent into tiny Crowden. It’s undemanding, mostly moorland running and often on stone flagstones but with the moorland vistas and some invitingly picturesque valleys, the walk has stacks of charm. The days running takes me to a marathon in just 2 days as I reach Standedge and I’m 9 miles ahead of my target

Reality

Very cold & sunny start at -3 degrees turning to heavy snow by lunchtime

RUN 15.67 miles – From Briercliffe myself and Ed Lee set out towards Catlow bottoms where we joined the PWIAD route. It’s really cold and very icy underfoot but we make steady progress. We head down towards Walverden Reservoir and through very boggy fields before climbing to Nelson golf course. From there it’s down through Reedley, alongside Pendle Water and then on towards the Crossroad of the Pendle Way and Burnley Way. From here it’s a 1-mile climb up to Higham before turning round and heading back down the hill. Up to Ightenhill then down to Crow Wood and along the greenway where the snow became very heavy. It was a slow plod from there back to Briercliffe in a blizzard.

Virtual Spine Day 1

Virtual Spine Day 1

Distance Covered Today – 10.75 miles

Total Distance covered – 10.75 miles

Virtual

The weather isn’t too bad for the start of this epic challenge, very cold hovering around zero but light cloud and no wind makes it good for running and walking. The race starts and I opt for walking the first 3.2 miles out of Edale on the road and towards the starting point of the Pennine Way at Newfold Farm where I then turn into the fields. Its a climb now up Jacobs Ladder to the summit of Kinder Scout. From here I head out over Bleaklow Moor passing a B29 plane crash site, a very sombre place in a remote part of the peak district the wreck is surprisingly well preserved seeing as its been there since 1948. At 10.75 miles my first day comes to an end with me 2 miles ahead of target.

Reality

Very Gentle breeze with light cloud and around 2 degrees.

WALK 3.18 miles – An easy walk with Linda up to Walton lane cemetery to lay our Christmas wreath in the tree near to my dad’s grave.

RUN 7.57 miles – Ran a loop of Colne up Albert Road, along through Laneshaw Bridge and up Emmott Lane. From there it was past the Alama and down Castle Road, up Red Lane then down through Alkincoats Park before heading back home. A lot of snow still around making running on the pavements a little treacherous so tried to stick to the road most of the time or ran on grass where the snow was a little deeper.

A New Year & A New Challenge

Well, 2020 didn’t go to plan did it lol. As some of you will be very aware my plans to do 20 half marathons in 2020 reached 4 before a nasty little virus firstly got us stuck in New Zealand and then ruled out all future races for the year. The challenge came to an abrupt pause in February after 4 races and with £65 raised.

So I’ve been thinking over Christmas about what to do about it and an email from the Charity with our friend Laura Nuttall in it kicked me into action. It coincided with another email from Montane about the annual Spine race which is a mammoth non-stop slog up the 268 mile Pennine Way. One day I would love to be able to do this but I’m a long way from that level yet. Interestingly though I spotted they were doing a virtual event. Basically, you run/jog/walk the 268 miles throughout the month of January which works out at a very challenging 8.64 miles per day. Not as brutal as the actual race but I’m sure you’d agree is still a huge challenge in the depths of winter (and a pandemic).

That’s me sold. So there you have it, my fundraising will continue with a different challenge because Covid-19 WONT beat me.

I’m also planning on doing another huge event in June which is ‘The Wall’. Basically, I will be running and walking the length of Hadrian’s wall in one day. More about that once I’ve worked out all the logistics, I think I’ve got enough on my plate in January though 🙂

The Virtual journey begins

Graham & Mark’s Coast to Coast walk for Pendleside Hospice

Only a few days to go now before myself and Mark Duerden attempt to walk the 190 mile Coast to Coast, created by the legendry Alfred Wainwright, in just 10 days. That’s a whopping average of 19 miles per day. Thankfully we get to stay in a hotel/pub each night to recover, or drink away the pain, and also get to see some of the most amazing countryside this country has to offer. We started this challenge purely as a personal one but with Pendleside Hospice being my favourite charity and run by some incredibly hard-working people, it wasn’t that hard to make the decision to raise some funds for them along the way.

I am hoping to be able to blog the journey each evening to let you all know how we are doing. I will post to Facebook and twitter regularly and you can also subscribe to this blog by entering your email address in the box at the bottom right of this page. This will ensure you get every post that is written here so you are right up to date with our progress. Im no literary genius but I will attempt to make it interesting and give you an insight into our amazing journey.

So if you feel like we are doing something good and you enjoy our journey then please please please spare a little of your hard-earned money and sponsor us. Every pound makes a huge difference to the hospice and ultimately the patients who rely on the amazing work the staff do for them.

C2C

The C2C challenge has gone mobile

Ive now managed to get the site optimised for viewing on mobile devices. So now theres no excuse for following our progress no matter where you are. Just type in the blog address and the magic of the internet will work out what device you have and render it accordingly. http://graden.org.uk/c2c

Please sponsor us on our epic challenge either at:

Our secure Just Giving page http://www.justgiving.com/gr4ph

Or by texting a donation. Just simply send a text to 70070 with the code GDPH65 and the amount you wish to sponsor from the following choices £1 £2 £3 £4 £5 or £10.

Coast to Coast can be tracked LIVE!!

We have been testing our live tracking and it now seems to be working. Basically Mark has a Garmin GPS watch that can connect to an app on his iPhone. The watch sends location info at regular intervals to the app and this in turn posts it to a live link whenever we have an internet connection. So each day we will start the session going and post the link on all the social media sites, this blog and the Pendleside Hospice web site. All you have to do is click the link and it will show you a map in your web browser with our location and our progress so far that day. At the top it shows the distance walked  and time taken and at the bottom in the blue bar you can view various graphs of the progress.

With the walk going through some remote areas the live feed will be intermittent but once an internet connection is established the route and location will be brought up to date. Don’t you just love technology 🙂

Fundraising reaches £1000

Today my Pendleside Hospice fundraising total hit a whopping £1000. Just what we needed to get us on our way tomorrow 🙂

The total is a combination of my 13in13 challenge from last year and the Coast to Coast which we start tomorrow. Please don’t stop there though, the hospice always needs our donations and help to keep running. So its on to the next thousand now with my ultimate aim to reach £10,000 one day. @PendlesideHosp @PendleNews
